Episcopal Bishop Faces Backlash After Speaking Out Against Trump’s Policies

The Right Reverend Mariann Edgar Budde, Episcopal Bishop of Washington, is under fire from Donald Trump and his supporters following her pointed criticism of the former president’s policies during a public address. Bishop Budde, a known advocate for progressive causes, called on Trump to show mercy and compassion for marginalised groups, including immigrants, the LGBTQ+ community, and others often targeted by his rhetoric.

In her address, Bishop Budde urged Trump to recognize the humanity of vulnerable communities, stating, “Our God teaches us that we are to be merciful to the stranger, for we were all once strangers in this land.” She also highlighted the contributions of immigrants and called for an end to divisive politics.

The speech, measured in tone but bold in message, has sparked outrage among Trump supporters. MAGA-aligned figures, including Representative Mike Collins, suggested Bishop Budde should be “added to the deportation list,” despite her being a U.S. citizen. Trump himself dismissed her remarks, resorting to familiar criticisms of women who challenge him, calling her “nasty” and “not smart.”

Bishop Budde has been a consistent critic of Trump’s actions. In 2020, she condemned his controversial use of St. John’s Church for a photo op, during which peaceful protesters were forcibly cleared from Lafayette Park. Her latest remarks echo her commitment to justice and equality, values she argues are central to her faith.

The backlash hasn’t deterred Bishop Budde, who stands firm in her call for leaders to demonstrate compassion. “There is room for mercy,” she said during a CNN interview. “We don’t need to portray vulnerable people in the harshest of terms.”

Supporters of Bishop Budde and critics of Trump’s policies argue that clergy have a moral duty to speak out during times of national division, drawing parallels to the leadership of religious figures during the civil rights movement.

As Trump’s rhetoric continues to polarize, figures like Bishop Budde remind Americans of the power of faith-based advocacy in championing inclusion and humanity.
