Richard Lowe is the owner of R’s Meat & Variety and Bar, located at Parks Road, St. Joseph.
Nestled along the breezy, scenic stretch of Parks Road in St. Joseph is a gem of a business that’s been serving its community for generations. Owned and operated by Richard Lowe, R’s Meat and Variety and Bar, a humble yet essential corner store is more than just a stop for gas bottles, hardware items, and lotto tickets- it is a continuation of a family tradition, a symbol of community strength, and a beacon of St. Joseph’s quiet charm.
“This business was conceptualised more or less in a family tradition,” Richard shared, reflecting on his late mother’s influence. “My mom ran a small establishment when she was alive, and I just continued the vein from her until it got to this stage now.”
Born and raised in Parks Road, Richard has never left. His deep-rooted love for his parish and its people is evident in both his words and his work. While business, like life, has its ups and downs, Richard remains steadfast in his faith and gratitude. “In everything, I continue to give God thanks and continue to put my prayers in God.”
Richard noted that visibility and word-of-mouth have played a big role in the store’s growth. “ We Gatherin’ was good in terms of advertisement,” he said, sharing that more people have become aware of the store’s offerings. That visibility has translated into increased economic activity, with more foot traffic and interest from both locals and visitors looking for essential household items in the area.
What sets his establishment apart isn’t just the variety of goods but the warmth and familiarity that customers experience when they visit. It’s also one of the few places in the area still offering roast breadfruit when in season a nostalgic treat that draws locals and passersby alike. “Roast breadfruit is a real tradition down here. Whenever it’s the season, you can rest assured that when you come here, you can get roast breadfruit.”
The area is also a magnet for hikers, drawn to its cool breezes, lush greenery, and tranquil vibes. “There’s something special about this place as not only do locals hike, but outsiders do too,” Richard explained. “Our area is really relaxing.”
Community spirit thrives here. Whether it’s residents coming together for neighbourhood clean-ups or impromptu street cricket games among children, there’s a quiet camaraderie that defines life in St. Joseph. “We come out as a team and we work in the community. That’s something I really love about this place.”
As We Gatherin’ highlights the unique character of each parish, Richard’s story embodies the spirit of adventure and authenticity that defines St. Joseph. His fondest memories of childhood was riding bicycles, playing cricket in the streets when traffic was light remind us of a simpler time and a deeper connection to place.
So whether you’re coming for a hike, a bite of roast breadfruit, or simply to support a longstanding family business, Parks Road has something special waiting at R’s Meat & Variety and Bar . As Richard puts it best: “The gathering in St. Joseph, to me, is opening up the parish to let people see the beautiful things we have to offer to the rest of the island.”
