PoeTree Barbados is continuing their mission to diversify spoken word in Barbados as they are hosting a show called Womanhood: The Power We Carry on May 15th, 2025, at Bean and Bagel 2.0, Rockley, Christ Church at 7pm.
The show which has an impressive all female lineup which consists of Linda Deane, Nailah Imoja,
Empress Zingha, La Shawna Griffith, Cher-Antoinette , Zoe Sunshine , Ayana John, Aaliyah Cumberbatch, Wanica Durant, Jalisa Jordan, Ebonee Carter, Dr. Jacinth Howard, Taitu Heron, Ashley Serieux, Sese Nova, Rojennan Holligan, Brittany Gill-Denny and Ariel Hamilton, consists of some of Barbados’ most award female poets.
Co-Founder and Organizer of Womanhood: The Power We Carry La Shawna Griffith said that this show, which is in partnership with Bean N Bagel 2.0 , seeks to allow patrons to celebrate all that is womanhood as well as experience the beauty of female poets and spoken word artiste.
“When we conceptualised, this shows we knew we wanted to have a diverse cast of newcomers and award-winning spoken word artiste. Our lineup is impressive and one that will entertain you from start to end. Our mission with PoeTree Barbados is to showcase all forms of our poetic landscape thus at this show we will have poetic readings, spoken word performances, storytelling, music and so much more, as we showcase the gambit of what our female artiste can do,” she said.
Griffith also added that at the show which is a few days shy from Mother’s Day they will be presenting Nailah Imoja, who recently won the Frank Collymore Literary Endowment Award their prestigious PoeTree Barbados Griot Award for her outstanding contribution to poetry in Barbados.
“When we as an executive, sat and discussed who should receive our 9th PoeTree Barbados Griot Award it was a unanimous decision, as we all agreed that the impact that Nailah Imoja has had not only as a poet, but as an educator, is one that we believe should be honoured and celebrated. Nailah is someone who has toiled relentlessly to ensure black female poets have a voice and an outlet to express their creativity and we are honoured and humbled to be recognising her for her contribution to the artform, and equally excited that she will be gracing the stage to perform some of her award-winning work as well,” Griffith said.
The admission for the Womanhood: The Power We Carry show is $20 BDS and can be paid upon entry at the event.
