Dr. Crystal Drakes
A visually stunning and deeply resonant anthology , Beyond the Beach: Conversations on the Blue Economy is set to redefine the way we think about marine conservation and island life. Co-anthologists Clish Gittens and Dr. Crystal Drakes have woven a rich tapestry of personal stories, photography, and essays that capture the intimate relationship between islanders and the sea. This immersive coffee table book elevates the often abstract concept of the blue economy into a narrative rooted in human experience and cultural connection. At over 220 pages with more than 30 interviews and articles, Beyond the Beach invites readers to reflect on sustainability, marine and coastal preservation, and the critical role of community. From fisherfolk and chefs to visual artists and environmental activists, the anthology unpacks the human-nature relationship in a way that is both insightful and accessible.
“Through evocative storytelling and stunning imagery, Beyond the Beach reminds us that the ocean is not just a resource, but a living part of our identity and culture,” says Dr. Crystal Drakes. “This collection is not an academic exercise, it is a call for all of us to rethink our role in shaping a sustainable island life.”

Barbados’ Prime Minister, The Honorable Mia Amor Mottley, offers her endorsement of the book, describing it as “a timely and powerful anthology that amplifies the voices of those whose realities reflect Barbados’ deep connection to the ocean as a cornerstone of sustainable living.”
In a world increasingly threatened by the climate crisis, Beyond the Beach emerges as a clarion call for action, challenging readers to engage with marine conservation in a meaningful and personal way.
Clish Gittens notes “Islanders are the true custodians of the sea,”. “This anthology gives voice to those who live, work, and thrive by the ocean. It invites all of us to recognize the ocean as part of our collective story, one we must protect for generations to come.”
