Barbados Manufacturers Disappointed by Lack of Healthier Product Incentives

The Barbados Manufacturers Association (BMA) has voiced its disappointment regarding the lack of incentives for local manufacturers to produce healthier products. BMA

President Rakesh Bernard expressed concern that the recent budget failed to introduce clear measures to encourage the reformulation of products to reduce sugar and salt content. He highlighted that while numerous BMA members have already taken voluntary steps to improve the health profile of their products, the absence of additional incentives acts as a deterrent for others to follow suit. Bernard emphasized the importance of supporting local manufacturers in producing healthier alternatives, particularly from a food security perspective. He suggested that a system that rewards reformulation, rather than taxing local goods at the same rate as imports, would be a more effective approach.
