Police officer sent on leave following video of beating

Grenada- An individual from the Royal Grenada Police Force, who appeared in a video widely shared on social media depicting an incident of a man being assaulted, has been placed on administrative leave while an investigation into the matter is conducted.

In a deeply disturbing incident that has ignited widespread anger across the country, the Royal Grenada Police Force (RGPF) had initiated an inquiry into a case of apparent police brutality involving at least three of its officers.

The incident came to public attention following the circulation of a video on social media. The video depicts a partially unclothed man on the ground, handcuffed and with his feet bound, enduring physical assault from an undercover officer who appears to be wielding a police baton. Two other officers were also seen attempting to transport the man to a waiting police vehicle.

The emergence of this video has raised significant concerns regarding the behavior of law enforcement officers and their training in the appropriate use of force.

In response to the incident, the RGPF issued a press release acknowledging the event and asserting that such conduct is not in alignment with the organization’s upheld standards. The release also reassured the public that appropriate measures will be taken once the investigations are concluded.

This incident has brought back to the forefront concerns regarding alleged incidents of police brutality against civilians in Grenada. One notable case dates back to December 2011, wherein four police officers faced unprecedented Manslaughter charges related to the fatal beating of Oscar Bartholomew, a Grenadian-born Canadian citizen.
