Port-of-Spain, Trinidad – Canadian travel blogger and YouTuber Christopher Hugh, known online as Chris Must List, was arrested on Tuesday by the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) in Trinidad and Tobago. He faces potential charges under the Anti-Gang Act and Immigration Act.
Authorities detained Hugh at his residence in Flag Staff, Long Circular, after 6 am. The arrest reportedly stems from several YouTube videos featuring interviews with alleged gang members from various areas.
Hugh reportedly visited the Canadian Embassy seeking legal assistance on Monday and was directed to lawyer Criston Williams.
Police sources claim the videos violate the Anti-Gang Act by featuring individuals brandishing firearms. They allege that by filming these interviews, Hugh provided a platform for gangs to display their “firepower” and send threats to rivals. Furthermore, the videos reportedly lack disclaimers regarding the sensitive content.
The Anti-Gang Act, Section 8, criminalizes knowingly providing “counsel, instruction, guidance, finance or other support” to gangs or gang members. Conviction under this section carries a maximum penalty of 25 years imprisonment.
Police sources revealed they analyzed Hugh’s videos over several weeks before his arrest. They point out that the videos depict individuals claiming gang affiliation, brandishing firearms, and issuing threats.
Authorities also expressed concern that some of the individuals interviewed were state witnesses under protective custody, potentially jeopardizing their safety.
Hugh’s questioning by the SIU continues and may involve consultation with the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) regarding potential charges. He is also expected to face charges for violating the Immigration Act, as he reportedly entered the country as a tourist, not for work purposes.
Hugh’s lawyer, CJ Williams, confirmed that authorities wouldn’t allow Hugh to leave despite not formally arresting him. Williams was also informed that Hugh’s release is uncertain.
