Gabriela Atherley, known by her stage name Life of Gabz , is setting the Barbadian music scene on fire with her unique fusion of hip-hop, R&B, and melodic rap. She is proving that Barbadian artists can break barriers and claim their space on the global stage.
Growing up surrounded by music, she was inspired by the sounds of her childhood—from church choirs led by her mother to her sister’s collection of classic R&B and hip-hop albums. Her love for songwriting and lyrical storytelling set her on the path to becoming an artist. What started as personal expression quickly turned into a professional pursuit when she saw the impact her music had on listeners.
“My sound has grown with me. I started off experimenting, but now I have a clear vision of who I am as an artist. I blend hip-hop and R&B into what I call melodic rap—catchy melodies, sharp lyrics, and bold visuals,” says Life of Gabz.
Breaking into the industry as an independent artist in Barbados has not been easy. With limited resources and industry connections, gaining international recognition has been a challenge. “The music industry here is growing, but getting the right exposure is still tough,”
she explains. “As an independent artist, I’ve had to balance everything—writing, promotion, visuals—but I love what I do, so I find ways to make it work.” By staying consistent, leveraging social media, and building a strong network, she has created opportunities to push her music beyond Barbados’ shores.
2022 marked a significant milestone in her life with the birth of her daughter, Ocean-Blossom. Motherhood has transformed her artistry, making her more intentional and disciplined. “Becoming a mother has changed my perspective and given me even more drive. Everything I do now is about building something for her future. I even wrote a song inspired by her, filled with clever wordplay around her name.
Balancing music and motherhood has been a challenge, but with a strong support system and a strategic approach to time management, she is making it work, proving that women can successfully navigate both worlds. “It’s all about prioritizing and planning ahead. My daughter gives me even more motivation to push forward.”
With the release of her latest single, “Play Mode,” She is ready to dominate the airwaves. The track, accompanied by a visually captivating video, showcases her signature sound and dynamic energy. Fans can expect more music drops soon, as she continues to refine her artistry and push creative boundaries.
“I want my music to make people feel good, empowered, and ready to take on the world. Whether it’s a love song or a hype track, the energy will always be strong.”
Looking ahead to 2025, she has big plans—expanding her fanbase, securing international collaborations, and exploring new genres like dancehall, Afrobeats, and pop. Live performances and potential tours outside of Barbados are also on the horizon.
She is on a mission to inspire fellow artists and elevate the presence of hip-hop and R&B in Barbados. “I want to show that Barbadian artists can make it big, no matter the genre. I want to inspire others to push past any limitations and believe in their craft.”
