Trinidad and Tobago – In light of recent heinous crimes, opposition member of parliament for Princess Town, Barry Padarath, has called for a national discussion on the implementation of the death penalty.

Padarath’s comments came in response to the brutal murders of Tara Ramsaroop and her infant daughter, as well as Laura Sanka, a constituent of his.

Speaking with New Centre 5, Padarath argued that “drastic times call for drastic measures” and that the death penalty, which is on the statute books of Trinidad and Tobago, should be considered.

He also proposed the establishment of a domestic violence bureau to review legislation, categorize types of domestic violence, and work in tandem with a specialized court.

Padarath expressed concern for victims of domestic violence and emphasized the need for increased protection and resources. He suggested implementing protection orders, establishing hotlines, and raising awareness about victims’ rights.

The MP warned that the current societal climate could lead to a rise in domestic abuse cases. He urged the government to take action to address the growing crisis.
