T20 World Cup: Caribbean Beefs Up Security due to Potential Threat

The ICC Men’s T20 Cricket World Cup, co-hosted by the Caribbean and the United States, kicks off today amidst heightened security measures.

Reports emerged in April 2024 of a potential terror threat linked to pro-Islamic State groups, specifically from North Pakistan, targeting the prestigious tournament [1]. In response, Caribbean governments and Cricket West Indies (CWI) officials have prioritized safety and implemented significant security protocols.

“We work closely with authorities in the host countries and cities,” said Jonny Graves, CEO of CWI. “We continually monitor and evaluate the global landscape to ensure appropriate plans are in place to mitigate any risks identified to our event” [2].

These plans reportedly involve increased collaboration between security forces of the participating nations. Additionally, regional security organizations like CARICOM IMPACS have facilitated information sharing and best practices among host countries [3].

While officials have not divulged specific security measures, increased vigilance at venues and surrounding areas is expected throughout the tournament.

Despite the security concerns, both CWI and Caribbean authorities have reassured fans and participants that safety remains their top priority. The tournament is expected to proceed as planned, with the opening match happening today.
