Businesses across Barbados are being urged to stay vigilant and tighten their security in response to growing concerns about commercial burglaries.
Inspector Roger Babb, Crime Prevention Officer with The Barbados Police Service (TBPS), is once again calling on business owners to take proactive steps to protect their staff, premises, and property.
Speaking on behalf of the TBPS, Inspector Babb outlined a series of practical security measures aimed at reducing vulnerability to crime. These include installing alarm systems and CCTV cameras, keeping entrances well-lit at night, and remaining cautious about unfamiliar individuals, particularly outside of normal business hours.
“Don’t open your doors to strangers after hours,” he warned. “And if you notice someone loitering around your property, take note of their appearance and contact the police immediately at 211.”
He also emphasized the importance of locking all rear and side entrances during closing hours and training cashiers to be observant of customers for potential future identification.
Regarding cash handling, Inspector Babb recommended varying daily routines to make patterns less predictable to potential thieves. He also advised limiting the amount of cash kept on hand, never leaving money unattended in registers, and leaving cash trays open at the end of the day to signal that there is no money inside.
“These simple steps can significantly reduce your risk of being targeted,” he said.
Inspector Babb reiterated TBPS’s commitment to working closely with the business community to create a safer environment for all. “Together, we can deter crime and make our commercial spaces more secure,” he added.
Business owners seeking more advice or wishing to report suspicious activity are encouraged to contact The Barbados Police Service at 211.
