Cricket Legends of Barbados is celebrating International Day of Sports and Peace under the theme Sport for the Promotion of Peaceful and Inclusive Societies
The International Day of Sports and Peace was declared at the UN General Assembly 23 rd August 2013 to promote the positive influence that sport can have on the advancement of human rights and social economic development.
Cricket Legends General Manager, Julia Caine spoke about the significance of the day to the organisation.
Caine noted that involvement in sports play a huge developmental role in the communities.
“Every person should learn and understand the collective power of sport in fostering team spirit and discipline. Not only does sport build team spirit and discipline there are also physical benefits. Most of our cricketing legends who would have played in the 1970’s especially, can tell you of their personal on and off field battles where they had to fight with a bat and a ball for inclusion and acceptance,” she said.

Cricket Legends of Barbados celebrates International Day of Sports and Peace as they reflect on the work done by their cricketing legends over the 1900s.
“The recognition of this day truly means a lot to us as an organisation and this year in particular with the ICC T20 Men’s World Cup being held in Barbados at Kensington Oval the significance is even greater as it solidifies the significance of sport in encouraging social engagement and promoting peace building communities for all people. We join the world today as we observe the International Day of Sport and Peace, and we look forward to increasing our efforts in engaging our youth through Cricket in our upcoming programmes. We also are excited to be enlisting our first female legends very soon to aid in our goal of empowering women and young girls who participate in cricket. We will continue to advocate the game as a viable tool for social integration and inclusion through the use of all of our cricketing legends,” she said.
