The Prime Minister commenced her speech at The Reimagining Education Transformation Proposals, which was held at The Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre, by expressing her gratitude to those within the educational system who believe in the possibility of change. She emphasized that our primary focus should always be the well-being and welfare of our children.
She expressed her view that we have now reached a juncture in our history where there is no alternative but to transform our education system. The existing system, which was established during the educational reforms of the 1940s in Britain, was designed for a colonial empire and does not suit a nation that values the perspectives and experiences of all its citizens.
She pointed out that the majority of the content presented by The Chief Education Officer,
Dr. Ramona Archer-Bradshaw and Dr. Idamay Denny, The Director of Education Transformation Unit, during their speeches was non-controversial. She underscored the importance of ensuring that education remains free from political bias and partisanship.
The Prime Minister also extended her gratitude to the Ministry of Education for engaging in constructive discussions with the opposition. In her capacity as the chair of the oversight committee, she pledged to actively engage with the opposition in an equitable manner.
Furthermore, The PM mentioned a partnership with the XQ Foundation to establish two new secondary schools. One at the Old Ursuline Convent and the other at Chelston Park. These schools will prepare students for specialist careers in the blue-green economy. She also revealed that Erdiston Teachers’ Training College will be twinned with an Ivy League educational institution. She emphasized that this initiative is part of the broader effort to decolonise education and break down lingering mental barriers.
Prime Minister Mottley stressed the need for us to stop exporting our top talent simply because we are unable to provide them with opportunities in the land of their birth.
