HASBROUCK HEIGHTS, N.J. — At approximately 10:18 p.m. EDT on August 2, 2025, a magnitude 3.0 earthquake struck near Hasbrouck Heights, Bergen County, New Jersey. The tremor occurred at a depth of around 6.2 miles (10 km) below the surface, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (
Though relatively mild, the shaking was felt over a wide area — including parts of Upper Manhattan, The Bronx, Staten Island, the Lower Hudson Valley, and even areas of western Connecticut, reaching distances of up to 65 miles from the epicenter.
Residents reported brief swaying or light rattling. One Brooklyn resident described it as “a very brief tremor,” while in Nutley, NJ, a resident said the shake lasted about two seconds and sounded like a “bang.” Staten Islanders likened the boom to a “car hit against the house,” followed by noticeable sway.
New York City Emergency Management confirmed tremors were felt in parts of NYC but emphasized that no injuries or structural damage have been reported, and no protective action is necessary unless personal damage occurred.
Officials continue to monitor seismic activity for any aftershocks. As always, residents are encouraged to report any structural damage (e.g. cracked walls or shifting items) and stay informed through local emergency management channels.
