Small Contractors Applaud Government’s Inclusion in Roadworks Projects

A local roadworks contractor has praised the Ministry of Transport and Works for actively involving small construction companies in the execution of critical infrastructure projects across Barbados. Co-owner of Alpha Omega Construction, David Straughn, lauded the initiative during ongoing road rehabilitation works at Sorrell Avenue and DaCosta Drive in Eden Lodge, St. Michael.

Straughn commended the government for empowering smaller, capable contractors, highlighting that many of the machines and equipment on-site were sourced from private individuals. “We are happy that the administration has succeeded in accommodating and actually putting work like this in the hands of small contractors,” he said. “The work is proliferating down, so we have that multiplier effect going through the different communities. We’re really happy about that.”

He noted that the roadworks have been well received by residents, who have shown strong support for the improvements. “The residents are very happy. Some have even asked us to remove their fences to accommodate the sidewalk. You can’t ask for better cooperation,” he shared.

The project, which includes Eden Lodge Main Road, Surrey Lane, and DaCosta Lane, is now approaching its final phase, with milling and paving set to commence shortly. Straughn acknowledged that recent heavy rainfall delayed progress but expressed optimism that the work would be completed within the next two weeks.

“We’re hoping the residents will be very happy by the end of this week and next week when the work wraps up,” he said, adding that essential utilities such as water services are also being adjusted to align with the new infrastructure.

The inclusion of small contractors in national development projects, Straughn said, has not only improved roads but also stimulated economic activity in local communities.
