Since graduating from the prestigious American Academy of Dramatic Arts (AADA), Gomez has crafted a career filled with remarkable achievements and valuable lessons, navigating both the highs of success and the inevitable challenges that come with pursuing a dream.
“After leaving AADA, my journey has been difficult but very fruitful,” Gomez shared. “Some projects required me to keep a low profile, but the experiences have been invaluable nonetheless.” Reflecting on their time at AADA, Gomez emphasized the transformative impact of their third year, which offered the opportunity to work closely with industry professionals, including casting directors and seasoned actors “It was more than just honing my craft. It was about learning professionalism, understanding the industry’s lingo, and remembering to stay grounded and kind despite the allure of stardom.”
Gomez’s career is marked by a range of memorable roles that showcase his versatility. From the whimsical Scuttle in The Little Mermaid to the emotionally charged Tin Man in The Wiz, each character demanded unique skills and a deep commitment to authenticity. “The Tin Man pushed me to connect deeply with the audience. It was raw and personal,” Gomez explained. He also embraced the physical and emotional demands of Scuttle, describing it as the ultimate test of being a triple-threat performer, requiring singing, dancing, and acting simultaneously.
One particularly cherished experience was being part of Matilda the Musical, where Gomez collaborated with a diverse cast to deliver a production that left audiences in awe. “The house erupted with standing ovations every night,” he recalled. “The joy of seeing performers of all ages shine and hearing audience feedback made it unforgettable.” These moments of triumph on stage reflect Gomez’s ability to connect deeply with audiences, drawing them into the stories being told.
However, the path to success was far from smooth. Gomez has faced setbacks and doubts, including moments when his talent was questioned by others. “There was a time when someone I trusted told me I wasn’t good enough,” Gomez revealed. This criticism could have derailed his dreams, but with the support of mentors like Dr. Glovina Springer, Janelle Headley, and institutions like Operation Triple Threat (OTT), Gomez found the strength to push forward. “Janelle reminded me that I was enough, and OTT became my sanctuary to hone my craft.”
Gomez also credited life lessons learned along the way, such as embracing rejection and staying prepared for opportunities. “One of the best pieces of advice I received was, ‘Don’t accept the first no, especially if it’s coming from yourself,’” he shared. Learning to balance multiple commitments—side jobs, classes, rehearsals, and auditions—taught Gomez the importance of discipline and time management, habits instilled during his time at OTT. His international work has further elevated his career. From appearing on Netflix and HBO sets to earning accolades at the International Human Rights Arts Festival, Gomez has proven his ability to excel on both local and global stages. These experiences have also reinforced his drive to inspire others, especially in the Caribbean.
Now affectionately known as “The Caribbean Denzel,” Gomez embraces the title with humility and pride. “It’s a heavy mantle, but understanding my acting style and achievements makes it clear why I’ve been blessed with this nickname.” As he looks to the future, Gomez envisions reaching new heights and using his platform to uplift aspiring artists. “My goal is to reach a point where people pay for a ticket or subscription just to see me perform—and then use that platform to pour my blessings onto others who share this path.” To those navigating similar paths, Gomez offers advice that reflects his journey: “Learn your craft, never stop improving, and don’t accept the first ‘no.’ Remember, ‘You are enough.’” These words carry the weight of experience and the promise of possibilities for those who dare to dream.
