Earthquake with 3.8 magnitude rattles Maine, Boston on Atlantic coast

A magnitude 3.8 earthquake struck near York Harbor, Maine, at approximately 10:22 a.m. on Monday, January 27, 2025. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the quake’s epicenter was located about six miles southeast of York Harbor, at a depth of eight miles.

The tremors were felt across New England, reaching as far as Portland, Maine, 45 miles north, and Boston, Massachusetts, 67 miles south.

Residents reported shaking buildings and homes, with some describing the experience as their “whole homes [shaking].”

While earthquakes are less common along the Atlantic Seaboard, the USGS noted that they are not unheard of in the region. Historically, New England has experienced moderately damaging earthquakes every few decades, with smaller ones occurring more frequently.

As of now, there have been no reports of significant damage or injuries resulting from the earthquake. Authorities are monitoring the situation and advise residents to be prepared for potential aftershocks.
