Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago – A proposed Carnival Friday concert featuring Jamaican dancehall star Vybz Kartel has ignited a firestorm of controversy in Trinidad and Tobago. The announcement of the event, which is traditionally a day dedicated to showcasing local soca artists, has drawn sharp criticism from many Trinidadians.
Critics argue that the inclusion of Kartel on the lineup disrespects the cultural significance of Carnival Friday and dilutes the focus on local talent. Social media has been abuzz with discussions, with many expressing their disappointment and urging the organizers to reconsider the decision.
In response to the backlash, the event’s promoters, One Caribbean Music Festival, released a statement clarifying the lineup. They emphasized that the concert would feature a diverse range of Caribbean artists, with soca music comprising 80% of the performances.
“We are following the long tradition of well-loved events that have invited performers from all over the world to participate in the greatest show on earth,” the organizers stated.
Vybz Kartel, who was recently released from prison after being acquitted of murder charges, is set to perform at a New Year’s Eve concert in Kingston, Jamaica. His upcoming appearance in Trinidad and Tobago marks his first international performance since his release.
