As Barbados seeks to pass their cybersecurity bill one company is seeking to provide employers with the necessary information to train their employees on how to protect their company’s data.
Northpoint Consulting Inc, a ICT Strategy and Solutions firm which has been operating for over a decade has provided digital transformation solutions which include cyber security services, network design, managed contact centre services, placement of specialist resources and project management to support their client’s ICT strategies said it is important for employers and employees to understand the importance of cyber security to prevent any security breaches.
This assertion came from General Manager of Northpoint Consulting Inc. Reiann Stoute who said that research shows that a substantial portion of security breaches happen from mistakes made by employees within the organization.
“Given the changing digital environment we operate in, it begs to question, whether these mistakes should be attributed to the employee or the employer who failed to provide the tools for employees to navigate a changing digital landscape? Organizations that provide cybersecurity training to guide and raise awareness among network users is critical, as organizations will benefit from raising the awareness among their teams about cyber threats best practices and the importance of cybersecurity in daily activities through low cost training programmes. Cybersecurity will be a part of annual training for all employees who use a computer at work. Insufficient awareness among employees about cybersecurity best practices, policies and potential risks can lead to unintentional security lapses. This may include actions like connecting to unsecured Wi-Fi networks or not recognizing the signs of a potential cyber threat,” she said.
Thus, Stoute believes that cybersecurity training of employees should be a matter of priority in companies and organizations throughout the length and breadth of Barbados. “Training your employees builds trust and confidence in the team’s ability to roll out cybersecurity strategies. When employees are aware and adhere to security policies, it creates a sense of shared responsibility for the protection of sensitive information such as trade secrets and intellectual property,” she said.
The General Manager at Northpoint Consulting Inc., Reiann Stoute, wanted business owners to not be fearful of the cost attributed to cyber security training as it is affordable for companies to do so and is value for money. “The focus here is that cybersecurity training for employees is a fairly low-cost yet effective first line of defence for organizations. It is a step in the right direction toward improving a business’ cybersecurity posture,” she said.
