Ex-Prime Minister David Cameron returns to UK government as foreign secretary

In an unexpected turn of events on Monday, former British Prime Minister David Cameron reentered the political arena by assuming the role of foreign secretary in a major overhaul of the Conservative government. This sweeping transformation also included the dismissal of the contentious Home Secretary Suella Braverman.

Cameron, who led the U.K. government from 2010 to 2016 and played a pivotal role in the country’s departure from the European Union, was selected for the foreign secretary position by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak during a comprehensive Cabinet reshuffle. The reshuffle involved the removal of Braverman, known for her tough stance on law and order, particularly in her criticism of the police’s perceived leniency towards pro-Palestinian demonstrators.

James Cleverly, the former foreign secretary, stepped into Braverman’s shoes following her removal. Sunak continued to enact further changes throughout the day, announcing the departure of Environment Secretary Therese Coffey from her position.

These bold alterations signify Sunak’s endeavor to reset a government facing challenges. Despite the Conservatives holding power for 13 years, recent opinion polls consistently show them trailing the opposition Labour Party by 15 to 20 points. The reasons cited include a sluggish economy, persistent high inflation, strain on the healthcare system, and a surge in public sector strikes.
