Glenn Maxwell smashed a 40-ball hundred — the fastest ever at the Cricket World Cup — to help Australia beat the Netherlands by 309 runs on Wednesday.
Maxwell hit nine fours and eight towering sixes as he scored 106 runs off only 44 balls to propel Australia to 399-8 (50 overs).
Coming in to bat in the 39th over, Maxwell’s feat overshadowed David Warner, who scored a second straight hundred and his 22nd overall in one-day internationals.
“Well, I had something like that light show happen at Perth Stadium during a Big Bash game,” Maxwell said after his man-of-the-match knock of 106 off 44 balls in a team total of 399-8.
“And I just felt like it gave me shocking headaches and it takes me a while for my eyes to readjust and I just think it’s the dumbest idea for cricketers.”
“So I just try and cover up as much as I possibly can and ignore it but it’s a horrible, horrible idea. Great for the fans, horrible for the players.”

However, Maxwell’s teammate David Warner differed on the matter and said: “I absolutely loved the light show, what an atmosphere. It’s all about the fans. Without you all we won’t be able to do what we love.”
