Portvale, St. James – The 10 Artists in Residence Exhibition, held at The Captain’s Annex, Portvale, St. James, officially came to a close on Tuesday, August 26th, 2025, after five days of celebrating Barbadian creativity as part of CARIFESTA XV Barbados. From all accounts, the event was a resounding success, drawing scores of visitors who came to admire and engage with the works of some of Barbados’ top visual artists.

The exhibition brought together the works of 15 talented artists:
Aaron Trotman, Christian-Paul Gibson (XiiThe7even), Christina Murray (Obsidian Art), Kadijhah Taylor (Kadijeus), Kenneth Blackman, Larissa Small, Lisa Fields, Mario Holder, Oneka Small, Ricardo Skeete, Sharae Joseph, Russell Padmore, and Margaret Hubert. Their displays featured a wide range of artistic styles and themes, from bold contemporary pieces to works rooted in Caribbean traditions, creating a showcase that celebrated both individuality and cultural identity. Visitors were also able to participate in interactive workshops, live drawing sessions, and art sales, which made the experience both engaging and memorable.

In recognition of their participation and contributions, each artist received a \$100 BDS sponsorship from Artists Alliance Barbados, with the support of generous donors and concerned lovers of the arts including Melissa Howell, Juliette Cumberbatch, Peter Thompson, Dani Brockington, Isaac Koranteng, and other generous patrons. This ensured that the showcase not only provided exposure but also direct support for their creative journeys.

Curator of the exhibition, Giselle Walker, praised the setup at The Captain’s Annex, noting that it created the right environment for the artists to thrive during the CARIFESTA period, “I can say that the layout of the space was ideal for allowing artists to have what could be considered a small hub for themselves during this CARIFESTA period, which aligned with our goal of visibility and support for local artists,” she explained.

Reflecting on the exhibition, Juliette Cumberbatch, Director of Operations of The Captain’s Annex, shared that the venue was proud to host the showcase during this landmark cultural festival, “As Barbados celebrates CARIFESTA XV, The Captain’s Annex wanted to give back to the society by providing a platform for some of our top visual artists to share their work. From all accounts, everyone enjoyed the exhibition, and it was truly rewarding to see the public engaging with our artists in such a meaningful way.”

The 10 Artists in Residence Exhibition not only highlighted the creative excellence of Barbados’ visual artists but also reinforced the importance of collaboration between cultural organizations, businesses, and the artistic community. The event leaves behind a legacy of inspiration and sets the stage for future initiatives that will continue to support and celebrate the island’s creative sector.
