Kingston, Jamaica – The Jamaica Police Federation has renewed its call for the implementation of specific protocols at hospitals for injured or killed members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF). The plea comes in the wake of the tragic death of Detective Sergeant Dwayne Mayne, who was fatally shot at the Half-Way Tree Police Station.
During a thanksgiving service for Detective Sergeant Mayne, Federation Chairman Roy McBean expressed deep concern about the current practice of police officers being treated in the same hospital wards as the criminals who injured them. He emphasized the need for a specialized protocol to ensure the safety and dignity of officers who have been victims of violence.
Detective Sergeant Mayne was killed on July 22 while escorting a businessman who reportedly opened fire on both the officer and himself. His death has sparked widespread outrage and calls for greater protection of police personnel.
The thanksgiving service was a solemn occasion filled with tributes from family, friends, and colleagues. Minister of National Security Dr. Horace Chang, represented by State Minister Juliet Cuthbert-Flynn, praised Detective Sergeant Mayne for his dedication and service to the country.
Acting Senior Superintendent of Police Rory Martin, who eulogized Mayne, highlighted the officer’s exemplary career and numerous commendations. He described Mayne as a “decorated hero” who had served with distinction throughout his time in the JCF.
Family members also shared heartfelt tributes, remembering Mayne as a loving father, devoted friend, and passionate musician. His death has left a void in the lives of those who knew and loved him.
The Jamaica Police Federation’s call for hospital protocols is a timely reminder of the risks faced by law enforcement officers in the line of duty. As the nation mourns the loss of Detective Sergeant Mayne, it is hoped that measures will be taken to ensure the safety and well-being of all JCF members.
