PoeTree Barbados is a newly formed entertainment hub which is located at The Sage Bar, Maxwell, Christ Church. The hub will focus primarily on the promotion of local spoken word artists is set to host their first event A Celebration of Spoken Word on February 29th 2024 at 8 pm at The Sage Bar.
The inaugural event which features multiple-award winning poet Theo Deo The Poet Greenidge as the headline act seeks to highlight talented spoken word artiste who would have done exceedingly well in 2023.
Organizer of PoeTree Barbados, La Shawna Griffith said she believed that events like these are needed to introduce persons to the talented spoken word artiste that can be found on the island. “Poetry in Barbados is a small close-knit society and I want to change that. My goal with PoeTree is to highlight spoken word in a new and refreshing light allowing persons to see not only the award-winning poets but also the up-and-coming poets who have so much talent and lyrical prowess that they bring to the table. When our team was deciding who should headline our inaugural event we decided on Deo The Poet . As a first-time finalist in NIFCA Theater 2023, he truly made his presence felt with the way he commanded the stage. And we believe that he will truly bring that energy and passion to the audience at Sage Bar on February 29th 2024,” she said.
The event which will also feature an open mic, will have award-winning poets, singers and songwriters all sharing their immense talent. Griffith noted that the events which are scheduled to be held every last Thursday at Sage Bar will have different themes moving forward and that persons will be introduced to various headliners each month.
“What we are doing each month is letting not only poets be the headliners, we are also doing fusions between poetry and spoken word so that members of the audience can have something new and fresh each time they come to PoetTree Barbados. Because ultimately, we want persons to come down to the event, and enjoy our product for a nominal fee of $20BDS whilst walking away feeling enamoured with the amount of talent Barbados has to offer,” she said.
Griffith invited persons to follow their social media page @poetreebarbados for further information on how persons can be a part of upcoming PoetTree Barbados events.
